Shrinking Chicago high schools

Enrollment at 17 Chicago high schools (archive link) has dramatically decreased in the past 10 years. Can these schools survive while students are offered fewer choices and resources?

For this series I made a series of graphics using d3.js that were embedded into the narrative. The first shows the 17 schools and there precipitous enrollment declines. Users can hover over the slopegraph lines to see individual school details, or click through the lines.

A chart comparing the shrinking school’s ACT scores to all Chicago high schools, showing these schools are among the lowest performing.
A follow up story (archive) dug into how state education board poured millions of dollars of improvement grants into these schools, but performance didn’t respond. This series of small multiple charts show ACT composite scores at these schools over the past 10 years.
